Thinking about medical weight loss? For many patients in Burlington and across Ontario, the first question is often:
"Will my insurance cover it?"
While OHIP covers your consultations with Dr. Sethi, medications like GLP-1s (Wegovy®, Saxenda®) are typically managed through private insurance plans. Follow these three simple steps to find out where you stand:
1. Find Your Drug Identification Number (DIN)
Insurance providers track medications by a specific DIN, not just the name. To get an accurate answer, ask our team for the DIN of the medication Dr. Sethi has recommended for your metabolic profile.
2. Call Your Benefits Provider
Check the back of your insurance card for a member services number. When you call, ask these specific questions:
"Does my plan cover [Medication Name] for weight management?"
"Is a Prior Authorization (PA) form required from my doctor?"
"What is my co-pay or deductible for this tier of medication?"
3. Ask About "Medical Necessity"
Some plans initially say "no" to weight loss drugs but will approve them if your doctor provides a letter of medical necessity (for example, if you have high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes alongside obesity).
Need help navigating your coverage?
At Dr. Sethi’s Weight Loss Clinic, we provide the necessary clinical documentation to help you advocate for coverage.
Most major private insurers in Ontario now require Prior Authorization (PA) for "Anti-Obesity" medications. This means your clinic must provide medical evidence (like BMI or related health conditions) before they will pay for the drug.
